May 1st: An epiphany.
Early summer of 2020 we traveled out west for a few days to look for and photograph wild horses( You can read many of the stories on the photos on this page). The story of THIS rustic beauty is actually post-production.
I have always loved photography and have also admired artists - you know, the ones who draw and paint.
On Sunday, May 1st, I decided to take a risk and edit a picture in a way I've never done before.
It's sometimes difficult to describe the beauty of these wild animals, and how much they differ from the horses we might see on farms, ranches, or in fields as we drive down highways and back roads. I try to capture that uniqueness in my photographs, and I try to tell stories about struggles for their very existence.
As I was looking through some of my 2021 photos I found this guy, and saw him as I had never seen him before. Beat up. Shaggy. Scarred. But his beauty and strength shone through to me.
All I could think of was rugged. I didn't want a busy background with mountains or grass. I didn't want other horses around him. I didn't want distractions. Only him.
So I "painted."I focused the light. I felt the colors. Then there came a point when I knew I had captured what felt to me like his essence. His bravery. His individualism.
This is a new world of art to me, and I've connected on a new level with these beauties. I hope you do too!
